Circular gilt metal medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a full-length female figure representative of Bulgaria imposed on the Madara Horseman; the reverse inscribed ‘1300 ГОДИНИ БЪЛГАРИЯ’ (1300 Years of Bulgaria) above a five-pointed star and a wreath of oak and laurel; on original ribbon with a slight tear, on pentagonal hanger. The medal was created on 16 October 1981 to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of a Bulgarian state and awarded to deserving prominent citizens. The Madara Horseman is a rock carving in northeast Bulgaria that dates from about 710 AD at the time of (and may even depict) the Bulgarian Khan Tervel, leader of the nomadic Bulgars who settled in the area at about this time. The medal was cancelled in 1991.
