Circular cupro-nickel medal with claw and ribbon bar suspension with original ‘मिज़ोरम' (Mizoram) clasp; the face with the Ashokan Lions above the Indian National motto ‘सत्यमेव जयते’ (Satyameva Jayate = Truth Alone Prevails), circumscribed ‘SAMANYA SEVA MEDAL’ (General Service Medal) in Hindi and in Latin characters, dated ‘1965’ at the base; the reverse with the standing Indian elephant facing right from the Ajanta Caves, as depicted on the standard of the Indian President and denoting patience and strength; attributed on the edge to ‘203320 SUB S S ARIY’ (SUB = Subedar, a junior commissioned officer); on original ribbon. The medal was authorised on 8 May 1975 (but with effect from 26 January 1965) to replace the General Service medal of 1950 and to be awarded for actions where no specific campaign medal was issued, specific actions being denoted by a clasp. Mizoram is a hilly state in the extreme northeast of India, sandwiched between Bangladesh and Myanmar (Burma). The ‘Mizoram’ clasp was created in 1975 and replaced the previous Mizo Hills clasp, being awarded for 180 days’ service combating an uprising by the secessionist Mizo National Front that eventually led to the creation of Mizoram State.
