Circular bronze medal; the face with three uniformed figures wearing Red Cross armbands assisting a wounded soldier, a field ambulance to the right, a field gun to the left with fortified emplacements beyond, a Greek (Geneva) cross below, hatched vertically representing the heraldic colour gules (red), signed ‘GUERCHET’; the reverse inscribed ‘AUX BLESSÉS DE NOS ARMÉES’ (To the wounded of our armies) and dated ‘1870’, with crossed French tricolour and Red Cross flags above, circumscribed ‘SOUSCRIPTION PATRIOTIQUE DE LA PRESSE FRANÇAISE (Patriotic Subscription of the French Press); in original slightly rubbed case of issue. During the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, the French press raised a subscription to purchase, equip and run field ambulances. Donors of significant sums received a medal such as this in acknowledgement.
