Miniature circular cupro-nickel medal with ornate scroll and ribbon bar suspension; the face with the head of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the St. Edward Crown and facing right, circumscribed ‘ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FID. DEF. (Elizabeth II by the Grace of God Queen, Defender of the Faith); the reverse with the arms of the Falkland Islands centrally, circumscribed above ‘SOUTH ATLANTIC MEDAL’, a laurel wreath below; diameter 18.85mm (0.74 inch); on original ribbon with rosette denoting active service in the combat zone.
The Medal was instituted in 1982 for service during operations following the Argentinian invasion of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, to be awarded for at least thirty days’ service in the South Atlantic, south of 7° South and north of 60° South between 2 April and 12 June 1982.
A rosette was added to the ribbon for active service in the Falkland Islands and Dependencies, or between 35° South and 60° South, or in operational aircraft sorties from Ascension Island between 2 April and 14 June 1982.
