Copper medal in the scalloped shape of a pauwlonia flower, with laterally-pierced loop at the top and eyelet at the base; the face with a radiant rising sun centrally, a golden kite perched above, imposed on crossed British Union and Japanese Military flags; the reverse plain, circumscribed above with five Kanji characters; oxidisation to the central reverse, possibly from glue, slight signs the medal may have been gilded; without ribbon. It has been suggested that this is a pilot’s training badge but we can find no confirmation of this and it seems more likely to have had a naval origin. Since the Anglo-Japanese alliance was officially ended in August 1923, this medal must date from before that time. Identification of the medal would be gratefully received.
