Bronze-gilt cross pattée with laterally-pierced cylinder for ribbon suspension; the face with an upright sword on which is imposed a circular central medallion with the head of a soldier facing left wearing a helmet within a ring inscribed ‘REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE’, the arms of the cross decorated with laurel leaves; the reverse with a central circular medallion decorated with laurel leaves above a rising rayed sun dated ‘1939-1945’ within a ring inscribed ‘COMBATTANT VOLONTAIRE’, the arms of the cross plain, Paris Mint ‘cornucopia’ bronze hallmarks to the base of the lower arm; on original ribbon.

The Cross was established on 4 July 1935 to reward French and foreign volunteers who served at the front during the Great War. The version for volunteers of World War II differs in a number of minor respects and is much scarcer.

This example, on the ribbon for the volunteers of 1939-1945, is unusual in that it is undated.
