Rectangular gilt bronze decoration with protrusions to each side, with slot, loop and ring for ribbon suspension; the face with a circular central medallion bearing the crowned cipher of King Alfonso XIII and his regent (and mother) Queen Maria Cristina, the Greek letters ΜΡ ΘΥ below (abbreviation of Μήτηρ Θεοῦ = Meter Theou = Mother of God) on a horizontally hatched ground, imposed on a beaded-edged geometric design, laurel leaves to either side, a laurel-sided stippled panel above inscribed ‘PREMIO AL MERITO’ (Award of Merit), a stippled panel below inscribed ‘A.M.P.I.’, floreate scrolls to either side of a point below; the reverse plain; on original age-faded ribbon with pasador top bar mounted for wear. We have been unable to establish the origin and nature of this Award of Merit but the crowned cipher dates it to the period of the Regency of the infant Alfonso XIII and thus the years 1886 to 1902.
