Gilt and enamel circular medallion mounted on a stickpin; the face with a red enamel Geneva (Greek) cross on a white enamel ground, inscribed below ‘BGSO’ in Cyrillic characters, all within concentric gilt-edged red, green and white enamel rings, the national colours of Bulgaria; the reverse plain gilt; diameter of the medallion 16.12mm (0.63 inch), overall height 40.32mm (1.59 inches).
The first Red Cross Society was formed in Bulgaria in October 1878 and the National Society was established on 20 September 1885 and recognized by the International Committee of the Red Cross on 20 October of that year.
