Miniature gilt medal with laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the Coast Guard seal within a laurel wreath with a cable border; the reverse inscribed ‘AWARDED / TO / ______ / FOR / ACHIEVEMENT’; diameter 15.36mm (0.6 inch); on original ribbon with pins for wear. The Medal was instituted on 29 January 1964 by Secretary of the Treasury Douglas Dillon as the Coast Guard Commendation For Achievement Ribbon and was amended on 11 June 1968 to become the Coast Guard Achievement Medal. It may be awarded to any member of the Coast Guard, including the Coast Guard Reserve, and to any member of the United States Armed Forces serving with the Coast Guard, for service on or after 1 April 1967 for professional achievement that clearly exceeds what is normally required or expected, making an important contribution beneficial to the United States and the Coast Guard, or for noteworthy and sustained leadership.
