Circular bronze medal with eyelet for ribbon suspension; the face with the Gothic letters ‘IFK’ within a beaded border; the reverse with laurel wreath, maker’s mark of C.G. Hellberg of Insjön at the base; on original ribbon and hanger mounted for wear. The Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna was founded in Stockholm on 1 February 1895 by Louis Zettersten and Pehr Ehnemark, two young students, as a sports association at a time when no national sports organisation existed in Sweden. An advertisement in the young person’s magazine Kamraten (The Comrade) on 1 February 1895 called those interested in sports to join the association and within two months branches had been formed in Gothenburg, Härnösand, Jönköping, Luleå, Uppsala and Västerås. The association grew quickly and a central organisation was created in 1901. Today the association has more than 160 branches and one hundred thousand members. This example dates from the late 19th or very early 20th Century.
