Miniature circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a half-length male figure, his head turned to the right, his armed crossed in defiance across his chest, signed ‘J.W.’ (for the artist Joseph Witterwulghe, 1883-1967); the reverse inscribed ‘FORSAN VICTI / NUNQUAM SERVI’ (Latin = Perhaps defeated; never a slave) and dated 1940-1945 above; diameter 14.21mm (0.56 inch); on original ribbon, the face age-faded, for those who refused to carry out forced labour duties for the German authorities. The medal was instituted on 12 February 1951 to recognise those who had refused to perform military or work service for the German occupiers. The medal is comparatively rare, especially in miniature.
