Miniature circular cupro-nickel medal with laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the head of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Tudor crown, facing right, circumscribed ‘ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F: D:’ (Elizabeth II by the Grace of God Queen, Defender of the Faith); the reverse with two firefighters using a hose, circumscribed ‘FOR EXEMPLARY FIRE SERVICE’; diameter 18.2mm (0.72 inch); on original ribbon.

The Medal was instituted in June 1954 to be awarded for twenty years good and efficient service to both full-time and part-time members of fire brigades throughout the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands and replaced various local authority and fire brigade trade union awards.
