Miniature circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced loop for ribbon suspension; the face with an open right hand, palm facing forward and upwards, lower right to upper left; the reverse inscribed ‘FOR / HUMANITARIAN / SERVICE’ above an oak branch, circumscribed below ‘UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES’; diameter 16.13mm (0.63 inch); on original ribbon mounted for wear on an American miniature rack. The Medal was instituted by President Gerald Ford on 19 January 1977 and awarded for qualifying service since 1 April 1975. The Medal is awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguish themselves in humanitarian operations such as assistance in natural disasters – earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and the like, man-made disasters such as fire and explosion, relief of starvation, evacuation of civilians from an area of conflict, support of refugees and evacuees and other acts as determined by the relevant senior authority.
