Silvered white metal badge of cherry blossom form; the face with crossed rifles imposed; the reverse plain with hinged hasp for wear; diameter 37.78mm (1.48 inches).

The award was instituted in 1882 as a single chevron worn on the right sleeve.  A circular medal with crossed rifles was introduced in 1886 and the chevron was no longer awarded from the following year.  In 1888 a pin-back badge of similar form to this example replaced the circular medal with minor changes in design in 1895, in 1912 after which the reverse was no longer engraved, in 1929 with a thicker version with smaller stamen and in 1941 when, as wartime shortages impinged, aluminium was used.
