Circular gilt metal medal; the face with a portrait of Georgi Dimitrov; the reverse with dates ‘1882’ and ‘1982’ and inscribed ‘ГЕОРГИ ДИМИТРОВ (Georgi Dimitrov); slight age oxidisation marks; on original ribbon with what appear to be glue residue spots and pentagonal bearer. The medal was instituted on 25 May 1982 and conferred on ‘outstanding’ persons, both Bulgarian and foreign citizens. The medal was cancelled in 1991. Georgi Dimitrov (1882-1949) was an active trade unionist and Communist. After the abortive uprising of June 1923, he fled to the Soviet Union, relocating to Germany in 1929. Charged with complicity in the Reichstag fire, he gained worldwide fame conducting his own defence in the Leipzig Trial of 1933 before again moving to the Soviet Union in 1934 and following a publicly slavishly pro-Stalinist line. In 1944 he gained his reward, returning to Bulgaria with the Red Army and becoming Prime Minister in 1946. He died suddenly in the Soviet Union in 1949, giving rise to speculation that his demise had resulted from too close a relationship with Tito’s Yugoslavia. Embalmed and put on display in Sofia, he was finally laid to rest in 1989.
