Circular bronze medal with integral loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the arms of Liege, being the Perron of Liege with the letters ‘L’ and ‘G’ to either side of the column, imposed on a five-armed Maltese cross with ball-tipped finials with oak and laurel wreath between the arms, dated ‘1914’ and circumscribed ‘LA VILLE DE LIEGE A SES VAILLANT DEFENSEURS’ (The City of Liege to her Glorious Defenders); the reverse with a scene of trench warfare; on original age-faded ribbon in the colours of Liege, mounted for wear in the Belgian style.

The Medal was awarded in 1920 to those who had defended Liege against invading German forces in 1914.

The Perron of Liege, symbol of the freedom of the city, is first seen on coins dating as early as the 12th Century but the original one was demolished by Charles the Bold of Burgundy in the 15th Century. The current Perron dates from 1697 and is to be found in the Place du Marché.

The Battle of Liege lasted from 5 to 16 August 1914. The German Second Army comprising 320,000 men under von Bulow’s command were charged with seizing the city of Liege. However, Liege was defended by a ring of twelve strong forts defended by 70,000 Belgians. The initial German attack on 5 August was repulsed with heavy losses but, following zeppelin raids, Ludendorff forced an entry to the city on 7 August. The forts, under constant heavy artillery fire, held out until 16 August.
