Circular bronze medal on ornate swivel suspension with club moss decoration and bar reading ‘ju-gun-ki-sho’ (War Medal); the face with a radiant chrysanthemum above a kin-shi (golden kite) with outstretched wings perched on a Japanese shield; the reverse with an army helmet and a navy helmet above a scroll with the characters ‘sho-wa-roku-nen-nai-shi-kyu-nen-ji-hen’ (Showa / 6th Year to 9th Year / Incident ) all on a field of cherry blossom; on original ribbon with hook and eye fittings; in original somewhat worn fitted embossed pasteboard case of issue, the lid inscribed ‘sho-wa-roku-nen-nai-shi-kyu-nen-ji-hen-ju-gun-ki-sho (Showa / 6th Year to 9th Year / Incident War Medal).

The Medal was created on 23 July 1934 for Japanese forces of the Kwantung (or Guandong) Army involved in the invasion and occupation of Manchuria.  As war was never declared, the Japanese referred to the campaign as an ‘incident’.
