Circular gilt bronze medal with eyelet for ribbon suspension; the face inscribed ‘ЗА ВЗЯТИЕ КЕНИГСБЕРГА’ (for the Capture of Königsberg), a radiant five-pointed star above, an olive branch below; the reverse dated ’10 АПРЕЛЯ 1945’ (10 April 1945) below a five-pointed star; slight loss of gilding from age and wear and a small knick at the base of the face; on replaced correct pentagonal hanger and ribbon. The medal was instituted on 9 June 1945 to be awarded to Soviet military who participated in the capture of Königsberg between 23 January and 10 April 1945. Königsberg, ancient capital of East Prussia, was the scene of ferocious fighting from 6 to 9 April 1945 following a siege that began in late January. Under the Potsdam Agreement the city and its surrounds were transferred to the Soviet Union and renamed Kaliningrad. The medal is one of the less frequently found World War II Soviet campaign awards.
