Circular gilt metal medal with eyelet for ribbon suspension; the face with a scrolled rectangular plaque inscribed ‘ESPOSIZIONE INTERNATIONALE / MILANO 1906’, the arms of Savoy above, a view of the exhibition buildings below; the reverse with the seated figure of a helmeted workman to the left, his hands resting on a drill, the Alps to the right with the twin entrances to the Simplon Tunnel, dated ‘1898-1906’, inscribed above ‘INAUGURAZIONE / DEL SEMPIONE’, maker’s mark ‘JOHNSON’ for Stefano Johnson of Milan below and numbered ‘MI 19803’ at the base; diameter 25.6mm (1.1 inch).
The International Exhibition of 1906 in Milan was inspired by the completion of the Simplon Tunnel under the Alps linking Italy and Switzerland.
