Circular silver medal with laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the head of King Vittorio Emanuele II facing left circumscribed ‘VITTORIO EMANUELE II RE D’ITALIA’; the reverse with a crowned female figure representative of Italy in classical dress, a spear in her right hand, her left hand resting on a shield bearing the arms of Savoy with vertical hatching denoting the heraldic colour gules (red) and a (white) cross, a laurel branch beyond, circumscribed ‘GUERRE PER L’INDIPENDENZA E L’UNITA D’ITALIA’ (War for the Independence and Unity of Italy); on original ribbon.

The Medal was created in 1865 for those who participated in the wars of 1859 to 1865, first against Austria and then the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, together with other smaller conflicts. By 1865 Italian unification had encompassed all of Italy except Venetia, still held by Austria, and the Papal States, including Rome, and the first Italian parliament met in Florence that year.
