Circular gilt bronze medal with laterally pierced ball suspension; the face with a map of France bearing the date ‘1944’ encircled by a chain broken in Normandy and in Provence, site of the two landings that year, marked with radiant stars; the reverse with a central upright fasces surmounted by a Phrygian bonnet, the letters ‘R’ and ‘F’ to either side (for République Française), circumscribed ‘LA FRANCE A SES LIBERATEURS’ (France to her Liberators), with Paris Mint cornucopia bronze assay marks; on original ribbon.

The Medal was created by the decrees of 12 September and 7 October 1947 to be awarded to the returning Free French and Allied forces who had made a notable contribution to the liberation of France.
