Circular silvered bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a portrait of Emperor Menelik II facing right and wearing the Imperial Ethiopian crown circumscribed with an Amharic inscription; the reverse with the Lion of Judah circumscribed with an Amharic inscription; slight edge nicks; on an old ribbon.

The Medal was instituted in 1899 in two classes by Emperor Menelik II (1844-1913; Emperor 1889-1913) to reward meritorious service, both military and civil, by those of lower rank and status not warranting admission to the orders of chivalry.  These were essentially non-commissioned officers and other ranks in the military and equivalent grades in the civil service.

The medal is rare.
