Circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with a half-length female figure in relief facing left with her right arm folded horizontally across her body, signed ‘PAUL WISSAERT’; the reverse inscribed ‘1940 RESISTERE 1945’ within a laurel wreath; on possibly replaced correct ribbon mounted for wear in the Belgian style.

The Medal was instituted on 16 February 1946 to be awarded to members of the Belgian armed resistance.

Belgium was on the route of many Allied bombers to and from Germany and the Belgian Resistance smuggled at least 3,500 downed airmen back to England at a time when there was a great shortage of aircrew.

A realistic estimate is that more than 70,000 Belgians out of a total population of 8 million took part in the Resistance.
