Circular silver medal with integral loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head of King Umberto I facing left circumscribed ‘UMBERTO I RE D’ITALIA’, signed ‘L. GIORGI F.’ below; the reverse inscribed ‘UNITÀ D’ITALIA 1848-1870’ within a circular laurel wreath; on replaced correct ribbon.
The Medal was presented in 1883 to all members of the Italian armed forces; several versions are known, all from the Rome Mint.
The Medal was intended to mark the unification of Italy from the uprisings of 1848 to the incorporation into Italy of Rome and the Papal States in 1870.
