This example dates from after the change of wording on the face in 1955. The Cyprus clasp was awarded for active service on Cyprus during the guerrilla war with EOKA (Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston = National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters) led by Archbishop Makarios and General George Grivas who wished to end British rule and unite the island with Greece. ***General Service Medal 1962-2007 with ‘South Arabia’ clasp. Miniature circular silver medal on ornate scrolled ribbon suspension bar; the face with the crowned head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, circumscribed ‘ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F.D.’ (Elizabeth II by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith); the reverse inscribed ‘FOR / CAMPAIGN / SERVICE’, a crown above, all within an oak wreath; diameter 18.1mm (0.71 inch); with ‘SOUTH ARABIA’ clasp mounted loose on the ribbon. The medal, often referred to as the Campaign Service Medal, was instituted in 1962 to replace the Army and Royal Air Force General Service Medal that had been awarded since 1918 and the Naval General Service Medal, awarded since 1915. was instituted on 19 January 1923. Like its predecessors, it was awarded to personnel involved in small conflicts where a separate campaign medal was not issued. The ‘South Arabia’ clasp was awarded for 30 days’ service in the Federation of South Arabia between 1 August 1964 and 30 November 1967. ***Cadet Forces Medal, Elizabeth II issue, 2nd type 1954-1980. Miniature circular cupro-nickel medal with scroll and ribbon bar suspension; the face with the head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right and wearing the Tudor crown, circumscribed ‘ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F.D.’ (Elizabeth II by the Grace of God Queen, Defender of the Faith); the reverse with a hand holding a flaming torch, circumscribed ‘THE CADET FORCES MEDAL’; diameter 18.66mm (0.73 inch); with 8-year clasp mounted loose on the ribbon. The medal was instituted on 1 February 1950 to be awarded to officers and uniformed adult instructors in recognition of long service of proved capacity in the Cadet Forces with twelve years’ reckonable service being required for award of the medal. This example with the Queen wearing the Tudor crown but without ‘BR.OMN.’ in the circumscription of the face dates from the period 1954 to 1980. ***The medals are bar-mounted on original ribbons with pin for wear. A very good trio.
