Rayed, faceted eight-pointed silvered star; the face with a gilt-edged white enamel Latin cross surmounted by the civic crown of the Franco era, a gilt and deep blue enamel anchor imposed, the gilt tower of Castile above left and below right, the gilt lion of Léon above right and below left; the reverse plain with pins for wear; diameter 65mm (2.56 inches); weight 33 grams (1.16 oz).

The Order was instituted in 1866 for Queen Isabel II in four classes for meritorious service in the Spanish Navy. In 1870, it was amended so that the cross was of white enamel in times of peace, and of red in times of war and adding the category of ‘pensioner’ for naval officers no longer on active service. In 1891 the category of ‘pensioner’ was extended to the lower ranks of the Order and in 1970 the red enamel version for wartime was abolished.

This good older example is from the period 1938-1975.
