Miniature circular silver medal with eyelet for ribbon suspension; the face with the crowned Schwarzburg lion facing left, circumscribed ‘FÜR TREUE UND VERDIENST (for Loyalty and Merit) above an oak wreath; the reverse with the crowned cipher ‘FG’ for Prince Friedrich Gunter; deeply age-toned; diameter 16.38mm (0.64 inch); without ribbon. The medal was instituted by Prince Friedrich Günther on 9 June 1857 and (with the crowned cipher ‘GFC’) by Prince Günther Friedrich Karl II of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen on 28 May 1857 to be awarded ‘zur Belohnung treuer Dienste und Anerkennung ausgezeichneter Leistungen’ (as a reward for loyal service and in recognition of distinguished achievement) to officials and military. The population of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt was less than 100,000 and the medal is rare, especially in miniature.
