Circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the head of King Baudouin facing left; the reverse with the arms of the Congo, circumscribed above ‘LOYAUTÉ ET DÉVOUEMENT * TROUW EN TOEWIJDING’ (Loyalty and Devotion in French and Flemish); some surface wear and age oxidisation, both sides of the ball suspension with impact marks; on probably replaced correct ribbon for a civil award. The Medal was instituted by Leopold II on 4 November 1892 to be awarded to members of the Force Publique and to civilians for loyal service to the Congo, the former having a plain blue ribbon and the latter, as in this example, from 22 December 1927, a predominantly yellow ribbon. This example dates from the reign of King Baudouin and was used from 1955 when this version with a bi-lingual reverse was introduced, replacing that with a French-only reverse, until the independence of the Congo on 30 June 1960.
