Red enamel cross flory with laterally pierced cylinder suspension; the face with a circular central imposed medallion with rayed pale blue enamel ground supporting the crowned image of King Alfonso X the Wise wearing a tabard decorated with towers of Castile and lions of Léon, a black eagle in his right hand, an orb in his left, encircled by a white enamel ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘ALFONSO X EL SABIO REY DE CASTILLA Y DE LEON’ (Alfonso X the Wise, King of Castile and of Léon); the reverse plain bronze and with the central circular medallion missing; much of the red enamel of the lower arm missing (see illustrations); lacking ribbon. The Order was founded in 1939 to replace the Civil Order of Alfonso XII and is awarded to Spanish and non-Spanish citizens for distinguished achievement in the fields of education, science, culture and research. Alfonso X (1221- 1284) was king of Castile, Léon and Galicia from 1252 until his death in 1284. He was a noted student of astronomy, mathematics and philosophy and did much to encourage the flow of knowledge from ancient Greek and Arab sources into Spain. This example was found in South America and its price reflects its condition – an interesting piece nonetheless.
