Circular silver insignia with mural crown suspension; the face with a black central medallion, a white enamel scalloped escutcheon imposed with a red enamel Geneva cross centrally, green enamel laurel leaves to either side of the escutcheon, a black shield below bearing a white enamel Maltese cross, all within a white enamel ring inscribed ‘IN HOC SIG - - NO SALUS.’ (= in this sign, health, the motto of the Spanish Red Cross); the reverse plain; height 37.68mm (1.48 inches); slight nicks and a small hairline crack to the white enamel of the escutcheon; on original ribbon with pin for wear. The Spanish Red Cross was one of the earliest national societies, founded in 1864. This example dates from the years of the Spanish Republic, 1931 to 1939, and was replaced with a version with the imperial crown following the victory of Nationalist forces in the Spanish Civil War.
