Miniature silver-gilt Maltese cross with graduated rays between the arms, the arms of white enamel with a gilt-edged red enamel central stripe, on oval gilt laurel wreath suspension with laterally-pierced ball and suspension ring with Belgian maker’s mark and silver purity mark in post-1942 form; the face with a circular central white enamel medallion, a quartered escutcheon imposed with the letters ‘ES’ on a red field, four gilt crosses on a white field, a gilt lion rampant on black field and a circular gilt character on a red field; the reverse identical; some loss of white enamel from the ring of the reverse; diameter 14.47mm (0.57 inch); without ribbon. We have been unable to establish the identity of this Order. The miniature came from the workshops of De Greef of Brussels and probably dates from the late 1940s or 1950s. The presence of the gilt lion rampant on a black ground suggests a link to Belgium but a Spanish connection has also been suggested, though we have found no supporting evidence of this. Any information would be gratefully received.
