Miniature circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a soldier standing at ease, the letter ‘V’ for Victory and a radiant rising sun beyond; the reverse with the lion rampant of Belgium, circumscribed ‘VOLONTARIIS 1940-1945’; diameter 15.42mm (0.61 inch); on original ribbon. The medal was created on 16 February 1946 to be awarded to those, whether citizens of Belgium or not, who entered the Belgian armed forces before 8 May 1945 for the duration of the war. The award was later extended to Belgian volunteer entrants into the British Royal Air Force and Royal and Merchant Navies.
