Miniature circular gilt bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a Chinese junk at half sail under way from right to left, circumscribed above ‘YANGTZE SERVICE’; the reverse with an American eagle perched on an anchor, flukes to the right, laurel leaves beyond, inscribed ‘FOR’ ‘SERVICE’ to left and right respectively, circumscribed above ‘UNITED STATES NAVY’; diameter 15.99mm (0.63 inch); on original ribbon mounted with pins for wear. The Medal was instituted by Navy Department General Orders Number 205 on 28 April 1930 to be awarded for service onshore at Shanghai or in the valley of the Yangtze River between 3 September 1926 to 21 October 1927 and 1 March 1930 to 31 December 1932.
